There has been so many times where I have thrown out a product because it has dried out, making it unusable. What I didn’t know was that I could revive it and make it usable again, saving me some money and use some of my favourite products for a little bit longer! It is important to remember that cream products do have a shorter shelf life than dry ones so sometimes when they have dried out, it means they have reached their expiration date. On the other hand, if you haven’t owned the product long and it has dried out, then it is completely fine to use this method to rescue it.
There are plenty of methods floating about which are used to revive cream make-up products such as MAC paint pots and cream eyeliners but this is the easiest and most effective way I have found to do it.
The product I’m using as an example is my MAC Paint Pot in the colour Painterly which I absolutely love and have been unable to use for few weeks now.
You will need:
- Mixing medium
- Dried out cream product
- mixing tool
Method:
- The first thing you want to do is find a tool that you can use to mix up the product. I took the metal end of a fine toothed comb.
- Use your mixing medium (I used MAC’s Fix+) and spray a small amount into the pot. Then use the tool to mix the contents of the pot until it looks like this:
- A lot of people are happy to leave it like this as the product will now be much creamier now that it has been mixed again but I want it to look a little prettier. It will never look the way it did when you first bought it but the main thing is that it becomes usable again.
- I then placed the product in the microwave for two 20 second bursts which broke down the product further, making it easier to mould into shape. To smooth it down, I used a cotton bud and pressed the product down to look like this:
You will find that your cream product is as good as new!

Wow what a fantastic how-to! I will definitely try this, as I have lots of cream products like this lurking in drawers as they’re practically unusable! xx
